Low Noise: An Integral Part of High-Performance CCD (HCCD) Camera Systems

ثبت نشده
چکیده

1 Noise is composed of undesirable signal components that arise from various sources in an electronic imaging system. The figure of merit that dictates the ultimate performance of a system is signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which describes the quality of a measurement (see Figure 1). In CCD imagine, SNR refers to the relative magnitude of the signal compared to the uncertainty in that signal on a per-pixel basis. Specifically, it is the ratio of the measured signal to the overall measured noise (frame-to-frame) at that pixel. High SNR is particularly important in applications requiring precise light measurements. When calculating overall SNR, all noise sources must be taken into consideration. The three primary sources of noise in a CCD imaging system are photon noise, dark noise, and read noise.

The influence of electron multiplication and internal X-ray fluorescence on the performance of a scintillator-based gamma camera

When considering the ‘standard’ gamma-camera, one might picture an array of photo-multiplier tubes or a similar array of small-area detectors. This array of imaging detectors would be attached to a corresponding array of scintillator modules (or a solid layer of scintillator) in order to give a high detection efficiency in the energy region of interest, usually 8-140 keV. Over recent years, dev...

CCD Camera Gain Measurement

The gain of a CCD camera is the conversion between the number of electrons ("e-") recorded by the CCD and the number of digital units ("counts") contained in the CCD image. It is useful to know this conversion for evaluating the performance of the CCD camera. Since quantities in the CCD image can only be measured in units of counts, knowing the gain permits the calculation of quantities such as...

Development of a new EM-CCD based X-ray detector for synchrotron applications

We have developed and successfully demonstrated a high speed, low noise camera system for crystallography and X-ray imaging applications. By coupling an EM-CCD to a 3:1 fibre optic taper and a CsI(Tl) scintillator it was possible to detect hard X-rays. This novel approach to hard X-ray imaging takes advantage of the low equivalent readout noise performance at high pixel readout frequencies of E...

Performance Comparison of Streak Camera Recording Systems

Performance characteristics of various readout systems coupled to an EGG-AVO streak camera were analyzed and compared to scaling estimates. The purpose of the work was to determine the limits of the streak camera performance and the optimal fielding conditions for the Amador Valley Operations(AV0) streak camera systems. We measured streak camera limitations in spatial resolution and sensitivity...
